TSS Earnslaw & Walter Peak High Country Farm
Cycle along the Back Road through spectacular high country
At Walter Peak High Country Farm we offer both guided and non-guided cycling options.
Walter Peak Guided Cycling
Cruise across Lake Wakatipu on board the TSS Earnslaw vintage steamship to Walter Peak and then join our small group guided cycling tour. Cycle along a quiet country road through beautiful tussock high country and enjoy stunning views of the Von River, surrounding mountains and snow covered Mount Earnslaw at the head of Lake Wakatipu. Cyclists are accompanied by a van with cycle trailer enabling them to cycle as little or as much as they choose. An experienced guide is on hand to provide assistance and answer questions.
Along the way visit Mavora Lakes, traditional musterers’ huts and learn about the neighbouring high country sheep and cattle stations. On arrival back at Walter Peak visit the Colonel’s Homestead before boarding the TSS Earnslaw for the return cruise back to Queenstown.

Please note: Mountain bikes can easily be hired in Queenstown from Outside Sports or other local suppliers. With this option cyclists need to be fully self sufficient with food/drink etc and well equipped in terms of gear and clothing as the cycling route along the Back Road is remote and there are no shops or other services. Safety helmets must be worn on the road and cyclists must not enter adjoining privately owned farmland. There is no accommodation on this western side of Lake Wakatipu, so it is important cyclists ensure they make their return cruise back to Queenstown.
Note: The TSS Earnslaw will be on survey mid May 2015 - early July 2015 and will NOT be operating.
We supply:
- Small map
- Snack voucher that can be redeemed on board either the TSS Earnslaw or at the Colonel’s Homestead, Walter Peak for one drink (tea, coffee, hot chocolate, soft drink, house wine or tap beer) and your choice of one food item (scone, muffin, slice of cake, pikelets or a small packet of chips/peanuts).
What to bring:
Mountain bike, safety helmet, bike repair kit, day pack, lunch, drink/snacks, walking shoes, waterproof jacket, warm sweater/fleece jacket, suncream/sunglasses/sunhat, insect repellent and camera.
